Horsing Around | Photographing Beautiful Horses in Montana
Last week, we wrote about choosing a theme for your photography (you can read more about this here »). Photographing horses is definitely a rewarding theme — be it in the Carmargue in the south of France or in rural Montana.
Jim is a passionate landscape and architectural photographer but he also seems to have a thing for horses. We’ve built a whole guided photo tour around photographing the stunning white horses in the Camargue in the south of France (more here »). It’s an unforgettable and exhilarating experience.
Jim also recently unearthed some fantastic photos of horses in Montana. Click here » for an article about where to find wild horses in that state.
And here’s Jim:
“I am often pleasantly surprised when I snoop around in my Lightroom Library. I sometimes find a collection of images that I completely forgot about. Plus, as Lightroom’s raw processing tools are getting better and better and my processing skills are improving as well, I am able to work with files that I may have come close to deleting in the past.
I came upon this group of horses a few years ago, on a highway west of Bozeman, Montana. The light that morning was beautiful and this group of curious horses approached me when I got out of my van. It definitely was a good choice to bring up the exposure in Lightroom to create a high key effect. All images were shot on a 100-400 zoom.”
Even if photographing animals is not something you usually focus on, the same overarching photographic principles of balanced composition, perfect light quality, and tasteful post-processing apply.
Enjoy Jim’s collection of horses in Montana!

A little glimpse into what to expect on the Camargue White Horses tour:
It does not get any more exciting than this. A group of white horses, in a foot of water, charging toward us at break-neck speed with water spraying and the horses’ manes flying, while our cameras are on rapid fire! Wow — how exhilarating! Great big fun!
Experience 4 action-packed, adrenalin-infused, sessions with the amazing horses in Southern France on our Camargue White Horses Photo Tour.
We will team up again with local photographer Patrice Aguilar who has had years of experience working with the horses and their guardians/cowboys. It is so thrilling (and safe) to rapid-fire shoot when the horses come charging toward us and then pet them between runs when they peacefully rest and munch on marsh grasses.
In between the photoshoots with the horses, we have plenty of time to also visit the bird sanctuary to photograph storks, herons, ducks, beavers, and flamingos and explore the interesting medieval town of Saintes-Maries-de-la-Mer.
