Tuscan Spring Tour | May 9 – May 17, 2013

Can you imagine Tuscany in the spring? Long warm days, medieval hill towns, cypress-lined lanes, the scent of herbs and wildflowers, rolling green hills, delicious fresh food and wine, and, best of all, you are there with your camera capturing stunning, professional images.
We invite you to join award-winning photographer, Jim Nilsen, and designer Magrit Baurecht Nilsen for an intimate 9-day photography adventure from May 9 through May 17, 2013. Explore the sensual landscape and villages of Tuscany and learn how to create stunning photographic masterpieces worthy of publication.

Our Spring in Tuscany photo tour is open to photographers of all skill levels. The only requirement is a desire to have fun and to learn. We will tailor photographic instructions based on each individual’s need.

Our tour begins in Pisa, where we will spend one afternoon and evening. The next morning we will depart for Pienza, a UNESCO World Heritage Site in the heart of the Val d’Orcia, a region that is universally recognized as one of the most beautiful landscapes on earth. We will spend seven nights in a cozy B&B in the medieval hill town of Pienza. This will be our home base for daily photographic forays into the surrounding countryside. Many of the iconic Tuscan photographs that you may already be familiar with were captured near Pienza. This convenient proximity offers us the opportunity to spontaneously return to specific photo sites to catch just the “Right Light.”

There will also be some days when you will have the option to rise early to capture images such as that quintessential Tuscan farmhouse in the early morning light before enjoying your first cappuccino. Close to Pienza we will explore the medieval hill towns of Montepulciano, Montalcino, Monticchiello, San Querico d’ Orcia,  and Castiglione d’ Orcia. Our comfortable van will also take us to some of the famous sites within a 2-hour distance, including San Gimignano, San Galgano, Monteriggioni, Pitigliano, Civita di Bagnaorgio, Volterra, Asciano, Siena, Orvieto, and the Chianti region. Pienza is small and intimate. At night, when all the tourists have gone back to Florence or continued on to Rome, we will have the tranquil walking lanes all to ourselves. We like to think of ourselves as travelers rather than tourists and our approach to this photo tour reflects this attitude. By spending a whole week based in one location, we will be able to experience the daily rhythms of life in a small Tuscan town. Evenings will give you the opportunity to sample the exquisite regional cuisine offered by Pienza’s many fine restaurants. The region also produces some of the best red wines in the world including the famous Brunello di Montalcino and its rival, the Vino Nobile di Montepulciano.
